Generative Conway Audio-Matrix
Audiovisual Installation
2026 · CompletedAn audiovisual installation that transforms Conway's Game of Life into a generative sound engine. The system analyzes cellular evolution across four matrix quadrants to drive a dynamic spatial audio environment.
The platform runs inside Max/MSP/Jitter where each quadrant drives an independent audio track with reverb, delay, and resonant filtering. Cell birth, death, and local density continuously modulate timbre, rhythm, and spatial placement — making the soundscape a direct sonic portrait of the simulation's state.
3D sound positioning is handled by the IRCAM SPAT5 library. A dedicated "Music Sensibility" filter isolates cells undergoing state transitions, giving the audio triggers a perceptual clarity that raw cell-count approaches lack.
The result is a self-organizing audiovisual system: deterministic at the rule level, but perpetually surprising in texture and rhythm.
